Question
An Engineer here suggested we use aluminum cake pan covered with aluminum foil as a faraday cage for transferring components between ESD protected stations. Our volume of ESDS device usage is low. ESD component classification = 0. Will this work?
Answer
Yes and no. It will work as a Faraday Cage, but may cause more harm than good. ESD Sensitive devices should not come into contact with very conductive materials as this may lead to an ESD event. Our shielding bags have a film of dissipative and antistatic plastic covering the very conductive aluminum film so direct contact to the metal (very good conductor) is not a possibility.
